CVT Retiree FAQs

  1. Who qualifies as a self-paid retiree?
Retired employees of a newly participating group or subscribers who retire from a CVT participating group may enroll directly with the Trust as a self-paid retiree when their status as a district-paid retiree ends. They may also enroll as a CVT self-paid retiree if they qualify as a retiree under PERS or STRS or are the surviving spouse/partner of a district-paid or self-paid retiree. Subscribers who have completed one full term or two two-year terms as a board member are also eligible for enrollment. CVT administers the self-paid retiree program, including billing and collecting premium payments from enrollees.
  2. Who qualifies as a CVT district-paid retiree?
Retired employees of a newly participating group or subscribers who retire from a CVT participating group may enroll with the Trust as a district-paid retiree when so determined by the school district. Retirees may select from the same health plans as the active employees in their bargaining unit. However, final plan selection is determined by their "retirement contract" through the school district.
  3. Can a surviving spouse of a retiree receive coverage?
A surviving spouse of an enrolled retiree is eligible for coverage; however, the surviving spouse will need to contact the school district office first for any special contract limitations. The surviving spouse will be offered self-paid retiree benefits through CVT if there are no special contractual items. A surviving spouse is not permitted to add a new partner.
  4. What happens if I terminated my coverage?
Please remember once coverage is terminated, it cannot be reinstated for either a self-paid or district-paid retiree.
  5. What benefits and services does CVT offer retirees?
A variety of benefits and products are available for retirees.  Self-paid retirees may choose from a menu of medical plans including 5 PPO plans, 2 Medical Supplemental plans, 1 High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) and 2 Kaiser Permanente HMO plans.  Multiple dental and vision plans are available as well. District-paid retirees may choose from the menu of plans available to the unit from which they retired.
  6. What pharmacy coverage is available?
SilverScript Insurance Company, an affiliate of CVS Caremark, is the Medicare Part D prescription coverage provider for all eligible CVT PPO members.  It is important to remember that you cannot enroll in another Medicare Part D Plan.  If you enroll in another Medicare Part D Plan, it will disenroll you from your CVT health plan and prescription plan.
  7. What are my deposit requirements?
Self-paid retirees are required to have on file one month's premium for all selected plans as a deposit.   Your deposit MUST always equal one (1) month's total premium and is adjusted annually to correspond with the current rates effective October 1 for the plan year.  All plan changes and deposit adjustments will be reflected on your Automated Clearing House (ACH) annual deduction notice at that time.
  8. Why do you need a deposit?
This deposit is held in your account as a safeguard against cancellation for late payment or premium and, should you decide to leave the Trust in the future, is fully refundable.  It may also be used for your last month's premium if you should ever terminate your coverage.
  9. What methods of payment do you accept?
CVT requires self-paid retirees enroll in the automatic payment plan or ACH. Click here for the authorization form.
