Back-To-School

August 18, 2025

Summer is almost over, and while California’s temperatures may continue to rise, so will the levels of back-to-school stress for students, caregivers, administrators, and teachers alike.

While some anxiety is perfectly normal, the back-to-school experience should be both positive and enjoyable. Taking a few extra steps now can prevent a negative experience and guarantee your child’s school year gets off on the right foot.

Tips to Ease You and Your Child’s Back-to-School Anxiety:

  • Start preparing children for the upcoming transition by resuming school-year routines in advance.
  • Arrange play dates with one or more familiar peers before school starts.
  • Visit the school before the school year begins, meeting the teacher if possible.
  • Rehearse the drop-off and spend time on the playground or inside the classroom if possible.
  • Come up with a prize or a rewarding activity your child could earn for separating from Mom or Dad to attend school.
  • Validate the child’s worry by acknowledging that, like any new activity, starting school can be hard but soon becomes easy and fun.
  • Practice self-relaxation techniques and when to use them, such as deep breathing with your child.

For Educational Employees:

  • Try to get as organized as possible to prepare for the busy year.
  • Remember to remain mindful and present as you navigate back-to-school stress.
  • Explore tools like podcasts, videos and articles that can be both relaxing and helpful.

Taking the time to plan can help ensure your back-to-school season sets the tone for an enjoyable, memorable school year to come.
