As September marks the start of National Suicide Prevention Month, it’s important to recognize the warning signs of someone who may be experiencing mental distress.

Recognizing someone with thoughts of suicide can save lives. Signs may include the following:

  • Expressing feelings of hopelessness/having no purpose
  • Withdrawing from social interactions or activities
  • Changes in sleep/eating patterns
  • Talk of or hinting about wanting to die or questioning their life
  • Sudden mood swings, expressions of anger/rage/seeking revenge

 

Suicide Prevention is an important tool for individuals and communities.

  • Professional Counseling: Mental health professionals are licensed to help individuals navigate tough challenges and overwhelming thoughts. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) are proven therapies to help reduce suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Medication can also be prescribed to help treat underlying mental health disorders.
  • Support Systems and Raising Awareness: Strong social connections and interactions are a vital part in not feeling alone. Fostering relationships with family, friends, and community can be a buffer between those thoughts of isolation and despair. Reducing the stigma of the complexities between mental health disorders and suicide can help people become aware that they are not alone, and have access to resources and education.
